Former Rector
University of Patras
Prof. Stavros Koubias received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering and his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Patras, Greece, in 1976 and 1982, respectively. From 1983 to 2020, he held various academic positions at the University of Patras, including Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Currently, he is a Professor Emeritus, serving as President of the Board of Directors of the Association of Professors Emeriti at the University of Patras, and is also a member of the European Association of Professors Emeriti.
Throughout his career, Prof. Koubias has held several prominent positions, including Director of the Laboratory of Electronic Applications, Chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Technology, and Rector of the University of Patras (2006–2010).
Overall, the scientific activity of S. Koubias focused on areas related to:
(a) technologies and architectures of advanced microcomputing and embedded systems,
(b) wired and wireless real-time distributed systems,
(c) advanced industrial-type automation and electronic networked embedded systems, and
(d) security of real-time networked systems.
His work aligns with the key scientific domains underpinning Industry 4.0, focusing on Emerging Technologies, Factory Automation, and Factory Communication Systems within the Industrial Electronics Society of the renowned and prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Notably, he was among the first academics in Greece to bridge applied scientific research with Greek and European industries through significant Research and Development (R&D) initiatives. These efforts involved collaborations with academic and industrial research groups across Europe and Greece, contributing to the high-quality education of engineers on industrially relevant topics. This approach equipped students with a strong scientific foundation, prepared them for further academic advancement, and enhanced their employment prospects in major industrial units in Greece and abroad.
Beyond his extensive research in industrial real-time distributed systems and advanced microcomputing/embedded systems, he participated in numerous competitive Research and Development (R&D) projects. These projects predominantly involved collaborations with large industrial units and production entities in Greece and abroad. They aimed to provide innovative solutions applicable to Greek and European industries, grounded in significant scientific and research achievements resulting from collaborations with prominent research teams in Greece and internationally.
In addition to his research contributions, Prof. Koubias has an extensive teaching portfolio, having delivered numerous undergraduate and postgraduate courses. He has supervised a substantial number of diploma theses and doctoral dissertations and coordinated European educational programs. His scholarly output includes approximately 200 scientific papers published in prestigious international journals and conference proceedings, primarily under the IEEE, which enjoys widespread international recognition.
An IEEE Senior Member, Prof. Koubias has served as a Member-at-Large on the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, reflecting his significant contributions to research, teaching, and the advancement of the field. He has been actively involved in the evaluation of European Universities on behalf of the European University Association (EUA) and serves as an editor and reviewer for internationally prestigious journals and conferences. Moreover, he has organized major IEEE international conferences and authored or translated scientific books in his areas of expertise.
During his tenure as Rector, Prof. Koubias spearheaded the digital transformation of the University of Patras. He also advanced the institution's international profile through initiatives such as a pioneering collaboration between the University of Patras Medical School and Johns Hopkins University, USA. Additionally, he facilitated closer ties between the University and the Municipality of Patras through bilateral development programs.
Beyond academia, Prof. Koubias has served on the National Council for Quality Development and as a distinguished member and coordinator of the Regional Advisory Committee for Research, Education, and Innovation, as well as the Regional Research and Innovation Council of Western Greece. He has been honored as an Honorary Citizen of the Municipality of Patras.
