Professor Costas E. Goutis received his B.Sc. in Physics and his M.Sc. in Radioelectronics from the University of Athens, Greece in 1966 and 1972, respectively. In 1974 he received his M.Sc. in Digital Techniques, Telecommunications and Automation from Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh) and in 1978 he received his Ph.D. in Digital Image Processing from the Southampton University, Southampton, UK.
He has been Teaching Assistant in Mathematics and Physics School, University of Athens, Greece and Technical Manager in Telecommunicatons Organization of Greece (ΟΤΕ), in charge of all telecommunication centres in Prefecture of Messinia. Later on he has been Researcher in Electrical Engineering, University of Strathclyde, UK and Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
Since 1985 he has been Associate Professor and Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Patras, Greece. He founded, developed and directed (until 2009) the VLSI Design Laboratory at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Patras, Greece. He is, also, the founder of the successful Master Program in Hardware and Software Integrated Systems. He has supervised 25 graduate PhD students, of which 9 are faculty members in Universities.
His current research team consists of 4 PhD students and 1 Post-Doc. His research interests include: VLSI Circuit and System Design in FPGA and ASIC, Hardware-Software Co-Design, High Level Architecture Synthesis of VLSI systems and Mapping, Memory Management Methodologies, Algorithmic transformations for optimal execution, Compilation Techniques for Embedded Systems, Low power VLSI design.
He has been responsible for 30 research and development projects, funded by E.U., Greek State and Industry. His research team has been awarded from: a) the IEEE society by financial support from IBM and Intel for the design of a component used in mobile phone, b) the DATE (the largest conference in Microelectronics) for his work in the processor design for crucial applications, c) SUN Computers and Mentor Graphics (one of the largest companies for circuits and systems’ design CAD tools) in an international competition. He has published more than 290 papers, 100 in journals and 189 in conferences, of which 2 has been best paper awarded. From his research team 2 spin-off R&D companies were created, one of which was merged with a company which was bought by INTEL.
