Grigorios A. Kalivas received the Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, in 1980, and the M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada in 1982 and 1990 respectively. From February 1991 until April 1994 he was a research associate in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University where he was involved in an R and D program funded by the Government of Canada and the Telecommunications Industry. In this position he was responsible for the design and implementation of complete transceivers for a novel broadband indoor wireless communication system which constitutes the most technologically advanced application for broadband wireless LANs. The development of such a system comes as a result of an orchestrated effort of Canadian Telecommunications Industry and 12 Canadian Universities under the supervision of the Canadian Government. Being involved of a full-time basis in this project, G. Kalivas has developed extensive expertise in every level of design and implementation of the physical layer of systems for wireless communications applications and in particular indoor portable radio at 1.75 GHz and wireless LANs and PCN at 30 GHz. For the above mentioned broadband wireless application, Dr. Kalivas was also involved with propagation measurements and channel modelling for wideband portable radio for LAN and multimedia applications. He was also responsible for the complete design and implementation of the physical layer of an experimental broadband wireless link to serve as a test bed for the above mentioned wireless system. He has also had continuous exposure in the most recent implementation technology (Si, GaAs, MMIC, hybrid, MCM, etc.) for such systems in the 1 to 30 GHz frequency range. Dr. Kalivas is now an Associate Professor at the Applied Electronics Laboratory, in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Patras. His research and development interests include receiver system design for wireless indoor and cellular communications and the design and implementation of tranceiver components and subsystems such as receiver front-end, frequency synthesizers and data synchronizers. In addition to these, his interests include spread-spectrum communications, propagation measurements and channel modelling for portable radio systems in the 1GHz to 30GHz frequency range. |
