Students that take this course:

·         Have proven knowledge and understanding of high speed circuits and systems  

·         Can design receiver circuits and handle jitter created in high speed integrated circuits

·         Can analyze and design a high speed circuit and optimize it for enhanced performance

·         Can understand the effect of high speed/ frequency of operation in performance and optimum design of corresponding circuits and subsystems

·         Have developed these competences and knowledge that are necessary to continue in the design of high speed Electronic circuits and systems with a high value of autonomy.

In other words, in this class students acquire knowledge in advances of high speed electronics such that they are able to recognize, combine, design and chose the most suitable structure for the implementation of a specific functionality of an electronic circuit with given specifications.

Students can also proceed in choosing a specific circuit/ system in connection with modern technological achievements taking into account performance (low jitter, bandwidth, speed), cost, power consumption, integration capability and functional adequacy. They can also compare implementation technologies and propose design methods for the implementation of high speed electronic circuits.

Analysis, synthesis and design of high speed electronic circuits and systems using also the necessary simulation technologies and Computer –Aided Design (CAD) tools.

Adaptation in new demands decision making in design. Autonomous work towards production of novel circuit structures. Introduction to creative thinking and effectiveness in design and development of high speed electronic circuits and systems.

Design issues and basic system concepts for high –speed signaling, modern integration technologies.

Design of fundamental digital high –speed circuit units (inverters, gates, Flip-Flops), optimization with respect to speed and power consumption. 

High –speed interconnects, interconnect wire modeling.

Receiver circuits (preamplifiers, clocked comparators, limiters), distributed circuits.

Jitter and other sources of noise, effect of jitter in performance.

Timing/ data recovery circuits (CDR), PLL for CDR applications.

Transimpedance amplifiers, techniques of broadband design, multiplexers.

TEACHING METHODS

The manner and methods of teaching are described in detail.

Lectures, seminars, laboratory practice, fieldwork, study and analysis of bibliography, tutorials, placements, clinical practice, art workshop, interactive teaching, educational visits, project, essay writing, artistic creativity, etc.

The student's study hours for each learning activity are given as well as the hours of non-directed study according to the principles of the ECTS

STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

Specifically-defined evaluation criteria are given, and if and where they are accessible to students.

Student evaluation is done in the Greek language (with possibility to be done in English as well) as follows:

a)      One written exam at the end of the semester which determines 65% of the overall mark. The exam includes  short-answer questions and problem solving.

b)      Two (2) written assignments (exercise solving) contribute a 15% of the final mark

c)      Project on design and simulation contributing 20% of the overall mark.

The final mark is determined by the following formula:

Final Mark=Max[(2 assignments x15%+ final exam x65%+ Project x20%), (Final exam)]
