Upon successful conclusion of this course, the students should be able to:

1.       Understand the fundamental concepts in energy (generalized kinetic, generalized potential, generalized dissipative)

2.       Provide the model of an EL system by applying the EL equations

3.       Provide the model of an EL system in state space.

4.       Understand and design P/PI/PID controllers for EL systems.

The fundamental electromechanical system. Power conversion in a simple electro-mechanical system. Equations of linear and rotational motion. Electric equivalents. Voltage and torque equations. Obtaining dynamic equations by using classical methods. Generalized potential and kinetic energy of the fundamental electromechanical components. Dissipation energy, injected (input) energy and its description for electromechanical systems. The principle of least action: Lagrange equation. Electromechanical systems as Euler Lagrange (EL) systems: Energy-based method for obtaining the dynamic equations of an EL system. The dynamic model of an EL system in state space. Examples with variable capacitors and coils. Dynamic model of the direct current (DC) machine and the Universal motor. Design of P/PI/PID controllers based on the nonlinear EL modeling. Passivity analysis and closed-loop characteristics.
