Upon successful conclusion of this course, the students should be able to:

1.       Understand the fundamental concepts in RES applications (wind, PV and storage systems) and the influence of the controlled power electronic interface in system performance.

2.       Understand how to integrate in a RES system, the power converter and the controller models.

3.       Design suitable control strategies for power electronic devices (based on the linearized or the nonlinear model of dc/dc or ac/dc converters).

4.       Design suitable control strategies for integrated RES systems

5.       Examine the entire system for its stability.

Design control in practical applications

Renewable energy sources (RES): an introduction. Distributed generation (DG) and high RES penetration. Wind turbine and photovoltaic systems and farms. Electric storage systems (ESS). Power electronic devices as power interface in DG. Wind systems topologies for constant and variable speed applications. System modeling in state space. Pitch angle control. Active and reactive power controllers for RES. Cascaded mode controllers with current inner-loops: Analysis and design on the dq reference frame. Environmental impact of RES installations. RES connected to the grid and in stand-alone operation.
