Background in performance analysis and engineering of communications systems.

Basic course in the specialization field of COMMUNICATIONS and particularly of communications networks.

PREREQUISITE COURSES:

Probability and Statistics (course of the 2nd year).

However, all the required concepts of Probability and Statistics are explained in the classroom.

At the end of this course the student should be able to:

• know, in addition to the fundamental relations that govern the Teletraffic Theory, the statistical nature of telecom traffic, so that he/she can choose the appropriate mathematical model to which the traffic load, the offered quality of service (QoS) and the capacity of a system (e.g., of a communication link).

• describe a system through state transition diagram(s).

• select the appropriate parameters for simulating traffic in the computer.

• present the results of a simulation in a correct manner.

The student will develop skills in:

• handling and implementation of recurrent formulas in the computer.

• simulating communication traffic in the computer and presenting the results of the simulation.

The student will have the ability to:

• design (dimension) a communication link or, more generally, a service system.

• evaluate and compare the performance of basic service systems.

Note:  Items 1 to 10 compose the minimum number of course subjects which must be taught and consolidated within the semester.

DELIVERY
Face-to-face, Distance learning, etc.

Lectures (4 hours per week including 2 hour seminars) using a chalk on the blackboard (or, marker on a whiteboard). All mathematical expressions are analyzed and proved; moreover, their physical meaning is interpreted. The students are called to implement recurrent formulas in the computer, as well as to validate the formulas through simulation; the simulation software must be developed from scratch by the students.

USE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY
Use of ICT in teaching, laboratory education, communication with students

• Some topics (mainly introductory) are presented via Power Point Presentation  in the classroom.

• The course has been registered at the eclass (a distance learning system) as an Open Course.

TEACHING METHODS

The manner and methods of teaching are described in detail.

Lectures, seminars, laboratory practice, fieldwork, study and analysis of bibliography, tutorials, placements, clinical practice, art workshop, interactive teaching, educational visits, project, essay writing, artistic creativity, etc.

The student's study hours for each learning activity are given as well as the hours of non-directed study according to the principles of the ECTS
