Students that take this course:

·         Have proven knowledge and understanding of high frequency and RF circuits and systems for telecommunication applications

·         Can design transmitter and receiver circuits and Phase-locked loops (PLL) circuits, can handle problems due to noise and non-linear behavior

·         Can analyze and design a high frequency (RF) circuit and optimize it for enhanced performance

·         Can understand the effect of high frequency operation in performance and optimum design of telecommunication circuits

·         Have developed these competences and knowledge that are necessary to continue in the design of RF and High frequency Electronic circuits and systems with a high value of autonomy.

In other words, in this class students acquire knowledge in advances of high frequency and RF electronics such that they are able to recognize, combine, design and chose the most suitable structure for the implementation of a specific functionality of an RF electronic circuit.

Students can also proceed in choosing a specific circuit/ system in connection with modern technological achievements taking into account performance (low noise, bandwidth, non-linearities), cost, power consumption, integration capability and functional adequacy. They can also compare implementation technologies and propose design methods for the implementation of RF electronic circuits.

Analysis, synthesis and design of high frequency and RF electronic circuits and systems using also the necessary simulation technologies and Computer –Aided Design (CAD) tools.

Adaptation in new demands decision making in design. Autonomous work towards production of novel circuit structures. Introduction to creative thinking and effectiveness in design and development of high frequency and RF electronic circuits and systems.

Characteristics of High frequency and RF receivers, design parameters of transceivers, Noise Figure, non-linearities, Dynamic Range.

Phase –locked –loops (PLL) and their design parameters. PLL stability, analog and digital Phase detectors, voltage –controlled oscillators (VCO). Applications of PLL in telecommunications (frequency synthesizers, demodulators, carrier and timing recovery subsystems). 

Analysis and design of high frequency (RF, IF) receiver amplifiers with emphasis on low noise performance (Low –noise amplifiers- LNA).

RF power amplifiers for the transmitter. Matching for high transmitted power.

Analysis and design of mixer circuits and analog multiplier circuits.

Circuits for implementation of FM and PM modulators and demodulators.

Examples of RF receiver systems for wireless applications.

TEACHING METHODS

The manner and methods of teaching are described in detail.

Lectures, seminars, laboratory practice, fieldwork, study and analysis of bibliography, tutorials, placements, clinical practice, art workshop, interactive teaching, educational visits, project, essay writing, artistic creativity, etc.

The student's study hours for each learning activity are given as well as the hours of non-directed study according to the principles of the ECTS

STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

Specifically-defined evaluation criteria are given, and if and where they are accessible to students.

Student evaluation is done in the Greek language (with possibility to be done in English as well) as follows:

a)      One written exam at the end of the semester which determines 70% of the overall mark. The exam includes  short-answer questions and problem solving.

b)      Two (2) written assignments (exercise solving) contribute a 20% of the final mark

c)      Project on design and simulation contributing 10% of the overall mark.

The final mark is determined by the following formula:

Final Mark=Max[(2 assignments x20%+ final exam x70%+ Project x10%), (Final exam)]
